“Haus Schminke” was built by the renown architect Hans Scharoun who also was a close friend of my great grandfather Fritz Schminke. This house has become sort of an attraction of the town of Lobau. Built in a modern style, pre-dating the Bauhaus architecture, it stands out amongst the other houses in this small town. Throughout WWII it was not damaged and also during the following Russian occupation ,It was then handed over to the town to use as a halfway home for kids and youth of east Germany. After the unification of Germany it was then donated to a foundation that has turned it into a museum and learning facility about the architect Scharoun. I learned that the house was tailor made to specifications by my great grandfather Fritz and his wife Charlotte. I figured that I could find more about my past and my family by understanding how Scharoun interpreted my great grandparents' needs and characteristics. My approach was to find the apparent objects in the house, analyzing the living space, and how they moved inside the house. Through this process of deconstructing the house and reimagining its past life, I was hoping to confront my family history and further understand how I feel about it, uncovering another layer in my quest for understanding my origins.
